The Belly Woman - Alana Bibeau, PhD
About Alana

Alana Bibeau is a certified birth doula and postpartum doula and a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and the University of Virginia, where she earned her PhD in Sociology.  Her doctoral dissertation was based on the three years she spent conducting research on contemporary discourses and practices surrounding pregnancy and birth.  Over the course of this research she spent time in hospitals, birth centers, and homes in three states, shadowing obstetricians, midwives, childbirth educators, doulas, lawyers, insurance workers, and mothers, researching the who, what, where, when, why, and how of birth in the U.S.

In 2004, after attending the birth of her niece, she began supporting women in labor; in 2006, she received her formal training at the Seattle Midwifery School through the Doula Organization of North America (DONA).  She is a Certified Doula through Childbirth International and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Rhode Island Birth Network.  Alana continues her education through regular attendance at workshops and trainings.

Alana lives with her two happy kids and their super-dad near Pawtuxet Village and serves families in RI and southeastern MA.  She is a mother, an educator, a researcher, and a professionally trained doula who offers gentle support to women and their families throughout the childbearing year.  She is also available for private and group babywearing and cloth diapering workshops.  Alana welcomes the opportunity to serve families of ALL shapes and sizes, including LGBTQ, teens, single mothers and adoptive families, and she particularly enjoys supporting women choosing VBAC and home birth.
